Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Sims Academy unique from other high school facilities in Barrow County?
The Academy will be equipped with the most current and up-to-date technology available for each industry program represented. Our objective is to expose students to industry standard equipment so they are work-ready when they leave our campus. We will also be seeking STEM certification to enhance the overall academic atmosphere in the facility.
What is a STEM school?
A STEM school provides an environment where learning is collaborative and project-based; kids work closely together in a hands-on way to solve real-world problems. Learning problem-solving skills — and helping students develop into creative, critical thinkers — is at the core of any true STEM school.
Who will attend the Academy?
The Academy will be open to all BCSS high school students. The fact that many pathways will offer their 2nd and 3rd level classes solely at the academy means most BCSS students will have an opportunity to attend the academy for at least 2 semesters, and potentially more, of their high school career.
Will students attend the Academy part-time or full-time?
It is currently anticipated that students will attend the Academy at a minimum of ½ the day, but could potentially be full time students should their schedule allow it. Most often, students who are at the Academy all day, will be dual enrolled with Lanier Technical College which is located on the same campus, across the parking lot.
Which Pathways will be offered at the Academy?
The Academy will offer 15 different pathways. These pathways are listed in detail under the Career Clusters menu option at the top of the page. You can also view a brief summary of where classes will be offered on the Career Pathways Flyer or download our entire Career Pathways Booklet.
How will the students get to the Academy?
There will be parking available for students at the Academy; however a very limited 66 spaces are available. The primary mode of transportation will be by bus to and from the Academy from the two (2) local high schools; AHS, WBHS and Snodon.
Can parents drop students off at the Academy in the morning, or pick them up in the afternoon?
Yes, parents will be able to drop off and pickup students at the Academy. If parents drop students off in the morning they will take the mid-day bus to their home school. Parents will drop off and pick up their students from the front loop of the facility.
Will I graduate from the Academy or from my home high school?
The beauty of the Academy is that it is an extension of the two (2) high schools. Therefore, students will still be “Double G Doggs” or “Wildcats” and graduate from their home high school.
Why should I attend the Academy?
Students will attend the Academy to take advantage of the amazing opportunities for exposure to industry standard equipment preparing them to be work-ready when they graduate and move on to their chosen field.
How is the Academy different from the traditional vocational school?
This is probably the most asked question by adults; and an important point to ensure all stakeholders understands. The Academy is a cutting edge facility focused on academics, as well as, careers. Our Mission is “To create a unique, career-focused environment that inspires all students to achieve work-ready results while promoting advanced educational opportunities.” We are preparing students for their future; whether that is a career immediately following high school or advancing their education at a 2-year technical college, or a 4-year college/university.
Which 27 general education courses will transfer from a TSG School to a USG School?
Since we are promoting dual enrollment as an opportunity for our Associates, we want everyone to be aware that USG institutions and TCSG institutions will accept 27 general education courses for transfer between their respective institutions. The entire list of those courses is available here.
